C22-06 Clinical depression afflicts many
people and costs businesses billions of dollars. Fortunately, there are several
drugs that effectively treat this disease. Pharmaceutical companies are
constantly experimenting to develop new and better drugs. Statistical
techniques are used to determine whether and to what degree that new drug is
better and whether there are certain people in whom the drug appears to be more
effective. Suppose that a random sample of men and women who suffer from
moderate depression are given a new antidepressant. Each person is asked to
rate its effectiveness by filling out the form below. The form asks people to
assess the drug after one, four and seven days, because antidepressants usually
take several days to take effect. Similar drugs often have different effects on
men and women. Consequently, the gender of the patient was recorded. Also
recorded is whether the patient suffered the most common side effect, headaches.
The following form was given to patients.

To evaluate your experience with this
medication, please place a tick to show how you have felt since you began
taking it.

The responses are recorded in the following
way:

Columns 1–3: Evaluations for days 1, 4 and
7 for men

Columns 4–6: Evaluations for days 1, 4 and
7 for women

Column 7: Headaches among men (0 = no; 1 =
yes)

Column 8: Headaches among women (0 = no; 1
= yes) The company wants answers to the following questions:

a Are there differences between men and
women in their evaluation of the drug?

b For each gender, is there improvement
between days 1 and 7?

c Does the frequency of headaches differ
between men and women?
