It has been maintained that patients have a right to
complete information about their conditions. But what happens when the
diagnosis reveals a genetic disorder that can have known harmful effects on the
children? Should the spouse automatically be told? The children? Other
relatives? Who is “the patient” in such situations? What guidelines do you
think should guide such information disclosure? Is there a right not to know
the truth? Under what conditions might such a right be argued?
