Solve a Telephone Traffi c Problem

A home with three telephone lines has a continuing problem
with their use. Each line has two extensions connected to it in the home. In

Solve a Telephone Traffi c Problem

A home with three telephone lines has a continuing problem
with their use. Each line has two extensions connected to it in the home. In
addition, one line is connected to the home computer’s modem, one is connected
to a fax machine, and the other to an answering machine and voice mail
recording device. The problem with each line occurs when the machine on the
line is in use and someone in the home picks up one of the line’s extensions to
make a call. When this happens, the call cannot be made because the line is
already in use, but picking up an extension while a line is in use also
interrupts the call in progress. If the fax is running or the computer is
online, their connections are broken by the pickup. Even the answering machine
disconnects from a call when a new extension is picked up. Despite having three
phone lines, the family in this home is getting very poor service from its
telephones. They do not want to put in more phone lines, but would like some
means of improving service on the ones they have. Write a short recommendation
of what they could add to their telephone system that would help the
interrupted call problem and get more use out of their phone lines.
