Test the Range of a Cordless Phone

In this project, you will test the range of a cordless phone
to see how far it extends and what happens to a call when the range is
exceeded. You will need access to a cordless telephone set that is connected to
a working telephone line.

assist you with this test. The person does not need to be nearby, just willing
to stay on the phone until you complete the test.

In this project, you will test the range of a cordless phone
to see how far it extends and what happens to a call when the range is

1. Using the cordless phone, call someone who is willing to
assist you with this test. The person does not need to be nearby, just willing
to stay on the phone until you complete the test.

2. When your call is connected and answered, talk on the
phone with the other party while you move away from the base of the cordless
phone. Keep moving away until you can no longer hear the other person talking
and they can no longer hear you.

3. As soon as you are sure you are beyond the cordless
phone’s range, turn around and walk back toward the base unit. As you move
closer to it, can you talk to the other person again or has the call been
disconnected?

 4. If you were able to talk to the other person again
without placing another call, why do you think the call did not disconnect when
you walked out of range? Where do you think the control for disconnecting a
call is located in this phone?

5. If the call did disconnect, where do you think the
control for disconnecting a call is located in this phone set?

6. Ask the person who is assisting you to call you at the
number of the cordless phone. Repeat your range experiment while talking on the
call that was placed to you.

7. When you go out of range on this call, does the line
disconnect? Does the system act the same for an incoming call as for an
outgoing call? Why do you think it does, or does not?
