Troubleshoot an Electrical Problem

A client asks you to solve a mysterious problem with his
home network. Almost every evening between 7 and 9 pm, the circuit breaker on
his network trips, shutting down the system. If the breaker is reset, it trips

Troubleshoot an Electrical Problem

A client asks you to solve a mysterious problem with his
home network. Almost every evening between 7 and 9 pm, the circuit breaker on
his network trips, shutting down the system. If the breaker is reset, it trips
again a few minutes later. After 9 pm, the problem disappears and the network
functions normally until the next evening. You observe what else is happening
in the home during the evening hours and find that the two children are usually
doing homework on their computers, playing video games, or watching television
(none of which are affected by the tripped breaker). The client’s wife cleans
up the dinner dishes and puts them in the dishwasher. She then reads, watches
TV, or helps the children with homework. When the dishwasher fi nishes, she
puts the dishes away. The client has not been able to find any electrical
equipment that could be causing the breaker to trip. The network’s central
computer is in the family room next to the kitchen, but it is on its own
circuit and when you shut down that circuit during the day, nothing else except
the network appears to go off. When you test the network circuit during the
evening, you find a sudden voltage drop just before the breaker trips. The drop
occurs before the breaker trips every time. About the time the client’s wife fi
nishes putting away the dishes from the dishwasher, the voltage drops and the
circuit functions normally. Where or what would you test to find what is
causing this intermittent problem?
